In recent geological times Tobago was part of the South American mainland which accounts for its abundance of island flora and fauna. Tobago has 210 species of bird, 123 butterfly species, 24 types of snake, 17 species of bat, 16 species of lizard, 14 species of frog and 12 types of mammal including armadillo, agouti, opossum and peccary.
Tobago has changed hands many times, from Latvian Colonists to the Dutch and then French and English invasions to when it was finally ceded to the British in the 1802 Treaty of Paris. Tobago became a British Crown Colony in 1877 and when the sugar industry collapsed it was joined with Trinidad as a political unit in 1888.
Tobago's roots unlike Trinidads are strictly African Caribbean. Some of the best traditions are showcased at their annual Heritage fetival in July, but during the year you are likely to stumble across a wake, harvest festival or a reel dance dedicated to ancestors. Tobago remains largely unspoiled many islanders make their living from fishing or gardening but increasing numbers are now employed in tourism and marketing the islands wonderful natural resources.
For the south east Caribbean Tobago is the premier dive location. Gentle pristine coral reefs, plunging submarine cliffs and volcanic formations offer amazing dives for both the novice and the experienced diver. You'll find 300 species of hard coral a huge variety of sponges, beautiful tropical fish and large marine creatures including the dolphin, manta ray, turtle, squid, shark and whales.
Speyside Tobago is the capital of Diving with the many currents drift diving is a favourite, although the dive industry was only established in 1980s it is operated to a very high standard and international safety standards are adhered to, a decompression chamber is available in Scarborough.
